Mamata Banerjee steps in to resolve Howrah Christmas Carnival Row
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched the Howrah Christmas
Carnival by herself. The event came to an abrupt halt amid allegations of
hazing in the name of parking. The Howrah city authorities alleged that the
program was stopped midway due to the objection of the 'closers' of the State
Minister for Sports Manoj Tiwari.
Last December 22, the Howrah Christmas Carnival started at Shasthi-Narayan Eco Park in Dumurjla, Howrah. Allegedly, money was being taken illegally in the name of Howrah Municipal Corporation in the name of parking. An agency called Maa Tara Parking, citing the name of the Howrah Municipal Corporation, collects this money from the day the fair opened on December 22. Illegally 10 rupees per bike and 5 rupees per cycle is collected. Money was taken in the name of the corporation but no valid receipt was issued. Minister and MLA of the area Manoj Tiwari went to the spot on Wednesday after receiving complaints from the residents of the area. The angry locals caught those who were collecting parking fees illegally and handed them over to the minister.
The accused money collectors named Mohammad Arbaz, Mohammad
Jahangir, Mohammad Shamsad, Dipu Dubey said during interrogation that they were
collecting money on the instructions of two persons named Rajesh Tiwari and
Saurabh Dutta. According to residents of the area, Saurabh Dutta is an employee
of the Howrah Municipal Corporation. On his orders, money was illegally
withdrawn from parking and stalls.
The MLA handed over the accused to the police officer of Jagacha
police station and assured that no other person can collect the toll illegally
in the name of parking. After that, the Howrah Christmas Carnival was closed
overnight. However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is angry. On her way to
Chakla on Thursday, she expressed his enthusiasm. She ordered the start of the
fair immediately.
