SC issues notice to Lok Sabha secretary general on Mahua Moitra's expulsion
The Supreme Court sent a notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat
in the case filed by Mahua Moitra regarding cancellation of the post of MP. The
Supreme Court wants to know why Mahua's MP post was cancelled. The Secretariat
has been asked to respond within 3 weeks. The next hearing of the case is after
March 11.
In the Lok Sabha, allegations of questions in exchange of money were raised against Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra. Following the ethics committee's proposal, the TMC MP was expelled from the Lok Sabha. He was not even given a chance to defend himself. After that, Mahua approached the Supreme Court. Last month, Mahua also requested for speedy hearing of the case. But that application was rejected. The Supreme Court heard the case on Wednesday.
On this day, the Solicitor General on behalf of the Lok
Sabha Secretariat claimed in the Supreme Court that the proceedings of the
Parliament are subordinate to the Speaker. Judiciary cannot interfere with it.
The division bench of the apex court said that we will not comment on this.
There are doubts about the extent to which the judiciary can interfere in the
work of Parliament. After that, notices were sent to all parties, including the
Parliament Secretariat. All parties have to respond within 3 weeks. However,
Mahua was not allowed to attend the proceedings of the Parliament till then.
At the same time, the TMC MP also demanded to get back the
bungalow. However, She did not get any relief from that. The court said that a
separate case related to the bungalow is going on. So comment on it is
unnecessary here.
